Anti-Microbials/Infections
Anti-Microbial/Infections
NOTE: If we are very ill, we will take anti-biotics.
The methods outlined below are only for our HOME use. If we are ill enough to have to visit a doctor or be admitted to a hospital, we will take life-saving medicines!
Antibiotic–Like Remedies
We use the following remedies that help us. If you use them, it is your choice and you have the sole responsibility of any consequences that occur. What helps us might very well not help you or might even injure you depending on your body’s genetic make-up and condition.
Whooping Cough
This can be deadly. See a doctor immediately!
After seeing our family doctor, our fully vaccinated 16 year old son still coughed for 100 days, but home remedies helped him to lessen the effort needed to expel the mucus. We also had a 6 week old un-vaccinated baby who developed whooping cough, but whose symptoms were much less severe than that of our fully vaccinated son. We did not give the baby garlic and we do NOT recommend anyone give their baby garlic. Read how we try to help babies below please.
Adults: 4 raw cloves of garlic per day
Olive leaf extract – 1 teaspoon 3 times per day
Babies, young children: (Old home remedy for whooping cough. This remedy can loosen up a congested chest.)
Slice very finely raw onion and raw garlic. Put slices on a clean piece of linen cloth. Fold the cloth so it completely wraps around the garlic/onion. Bandage the wrapped garlic onto the feet. The juice will slowly be absorbed through the linen into the feet. Caution: Do not blister the feet by letting the onion or garlic touch the skin. I put olive oil on the feet/skin in case of accidental contact so the skin won't burn as readily. A pair of socks can be fitted over the cloth and bootie or shoes worn normally, but we have found that garlic oil capsules that you can purchase from the supermarket or chemist, can be rubbed on baby’s feet and this seems to clear the breathing quite effectively. Garlic juice can and will blister even an adult’s skin, so it should not be applied directly to either babies or adult skin. Adults only might dilute the garlic juice with olive oil then apply that oil to prevent burning and ulcer formation. We do not apply garlic juice to babies skin or give it to them orally or any other way!
As adults some of our family also use a herbal tincture called Dial-8. The bottle indicates that a child should be 12 years old before taking the herbal tincture. It certainly seems to help break up the mucus of asthma and the flu.
Flu Bomb
1 clove garlic
1/8 tsp finely chopped ginger
1 drop of tea-tree or eucalyptus oil
1 tps honey
Juice of 1 lemon
1/3 cup of hot water
¼ - ½ tsp cayenne (we don’t use cayenne as it is in the nightshade family and too hot to take)
Some brave members of our family will drink the bomb three times a day for 2 days to get over a flu. They don’t usually need it anymore by the 3rd day.
(Personally, I don't do this method as I think the struggle to drink it is just as bad as how the flu makes me feel!)
Young Living Essential Oils
We use organic, pure Young Living Essential Oils as anti-biotic-like treatments. Essential oils are potent and powerful and must be treated with respect. We can’t recommend essential oils produced from any other company, as we don’t know if they are chemically extracted, polluted with solvents etc. We started by taking 1 drop of an essential oil in a vege cap as a safety precaution in case it caused detox symptoms or other negative reactions. We were fine with taking the oils internally, but we can’t say whether other people might be able to safely do the same thing as we did. We believe it is wise to be cautious when introducing new substances to the body.
Typical remedies are:
Recipe#1
6 drops oregano
6 drops thyme
3 drops marjoram
Put in a vege capsule and swallow with oily food - olive oil, avocado.
Recipe#2
6 drops oregano
6 drops thyme
3 drops mt savory
Put in a vege capsule and swallow with oily food - olive oil, avocado.
Anti-Viral recipe
6 drops Thieves blend
6 drops RC
3 drops Frankincense
Put in a vegetable capsule and swallow with oily food - olive oil, avocado.
We find that Vitamin C in the form of Sodium Ascorbate powder helps us with infections and inflammations and thus by reducing infection and inflammation, it helps to reduce pain.
We take 1 tsp of the powder at a time and sometimes, when quite ill, we will take that amount every hour but stop if we get the diarrhea. We know if we've had too much Vit C if our bowel motions become loose.

Young Living Essential Oils - examples of how we apply them to our horses and to rescue horses with good results. We are guided by the reports on Pub-Med that have tested oils on rodents and some other animals, plus from the information received from Melissa Sheldon, veterinarian in USA who toured Australia and who has written a book on how to apply essential oils on animals. I have also attended her workshop, been supplied with her notes and spoken personally with her about oils being applied to animals.
However, this information cannot take the place of you speaking with your veterinarian about your own animals. This therefore is not to be taken as being medical, veterinarian or qualified advice. It is our experiences and for your interest only. We recommend that horse owners consult with their own veterinarian for all and any aspects of your horses' health.
When we offer oils to an animal, they are not given orally, but are applied topically, diluted with a pure cold pressed, organic vegetable or coconut oil. The animal is allowed to inhale the diluted oils if they so choose, but obviously we don't offer 'hot' oils to the animals for inhaling.
Young Living essential oils that we have offered to our animals
Lemongrass for tendon/ligament regeneration; (photos of severed tendon injury we treated with essential oils - https://picasaweb.google.com/102123489348150698347/HorseTendonInjuryEssentialOils) See testimonial photos below
Helichrysum for nerve regeneration;
Lavender, Frankincense, Heilchrysum, Melrose, Hyssop and Gentle Baby (Young Living blend of geranium, jasmine, ylang ylang, rosewood, roman chamomile, rose, lemon, bergamot, lavender and palmrosa) for dissolving scar tissue and/or reducing scar tissue, improving elasticity of skin.
Frankincense & Idaho Balsam Fir for tumors called melanomas especially on grey and chestnut horses - linked to copper deficiency;
Cypress for swellings/circulation problems (including founder/laminitis, bowed tendon);
Tangerine (Citrus nobilis), orange (Citrus aurantium), ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) and blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum) blended together for calming effect, colic and choke;
Wintergreen, copiaba, balsam fir, clove, heylichrysum for anti-inflammatories (laminitis/founder) and ocotea for blood sugar regulation
In cases of laminitis/founder, powerful anti-inflammatories are used along with icing the feet. Please DO consult your veterinarian if you are not extremely familiar with treating laminitis. Laminitis and founder (penetration of bony column through the sole) can be fatal, so please do not wait to get veterinarian assistance.
Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and peppermint (Mentha piperita) and anti-inflammatory oils blended together for pain etc.
Thyme, oregano, mountain savory, clove for abscesses, infections -Equine Amnionitis and Foetal Loss from infected placenta caused by Procession/Tent caterpillars, plus the anti-histamines Vit B3 and Vit C and anti-inflammatory oils NOTE: ( We have not had experience of mares with EAFL, but the following would be some treatments I would be trialing given that the current medical approach doesn't appear to be very successful in saving foals and preventing abortions.
Rosemary, tea tree, clove, oregano, (and neem oil) for thrush in frog, seedy toe and fungal infections (apply to coronet band, white line separation and collateral grooves and any black/grey/white spots marked on frog)
Helichrysum, Birch, Clove, Peppermint, Wintergreen, Eucalyptus globulus leaf, Myrtus communis, Pine, Marjoram, Eucalyptus radiata, Eucalyptus citriodora, Lavender, Cupressus sempervirens, Tsuga for bone regeneration, reducing bony lumps.
Marjoram to relax tight, knotted muscles.
Lemon oil for kidney stones (15 minutes relieves pain, passes stone - works on me too).
Helichrysum, ledum, celery seed oils for liver congestion caused by toxic chemicals or parasite overload toxicity. Young Living's oil blend called Juva Cleanse contains these three oils.
Basil, ocotea, vetiver, cypress, coriander, dill, cinnamon geranium, peppermint, mountain savory, oregano for pancreatic support - cushings, blood sugar imbalances
Rue (Ruta graveolens) contains pilocarpine which is used in horse to induce abortion. (We offer this as a warning against causing abortion by using this oil on a pregnant mare - not as a pro-abortion use of the essential oil).
There is no placebo effect when giving these oils to animals. These oils work fast for us on our horses, goats and chickens. We have heard that citrus oils might be injurious to cats, so we have not tried citrus oils, or any other oils, on our cats.
Young Living Essential Oils are expensive, but we are prepared to pay for the guarantee that they are organic, processed without solvents and pure quality and strong concentration They contain no chemical solvents and the oils are not heated to the point where they become impotent. Young Living essential oils are potent and powerful and of course, such high quality means that they must be more expensive than cheap, laboratory created chemicals which are passed off as being 'essential oils.' There might be other oils just as pure, but I haven’t tried them so can’t say if any other particular brands are helpful or not. We have found that Young Living essential oils are less expensive than calling out the vet for every injury, bruise or infection that needs antimicrobial action. (I'm not suggesting not getting the vet for obvious conditions like broken bones, teeth, eye injuries, colic, EMS, laminitis, PPID etc. To refuse to call the vet when it is obviously necessary would be a form of animal abuse and we certainly will not recommend any neglect or abuse of any animal (or human) for that matter!
