Vaginal Thrush
We have found that vaginal thrush can be a recurrent problem for women, especially after a course of anti-biotics.
One of the best home remedies we have used to help relieve these uncomfortable symptoms is inserting a vegecap that is half-filled with borax powder into the vagina.
Borax is not to be confused with boric acid! Borax is a naturally occurring mineral, while boric acid is derived from borax by the use of hydrochloric acid. We do not use boric acid as a home remedy. Borax can be purchased in Australia in the laundry aisle of the supermarket, particularly IGA supermarkets. (Coles do not stock the product anymore – 2013)
It is the action of water on borax that produces the hydrogen peroxide that helps relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of thrush.
While this is not a long term solution, it has helped us out in those times when we can’t get to a chemist.
After using the borax capsule, vaginal secretions increase temporarily.
We also use diluted borax – in warm filtered water- as a douche to rinse which is very soothing. We only add enough borax powder to make the water silky to touch. Experience has taught us that using bulb syringes can be difficult to use correctly and can sometimes cause severe abdominal spasms – a very painful sensation like period pain. We use an enema kit with a douche nozzle so that there is no chance of too much pressure causing air or solution to be forced past the cervix.
For more information about Borax, please see the following:
Chemical Formula: Na2B4O7.
Also known as: Sodium borate decahydrate, Sodium tetraborate decahydrate, Sodium biborate, Sodium pyroborate.
Description
White powder.
Uses
Borax is used in laundry detergents and bleaches. It releases hydrogen peroxide when it reacts with water. Hydrogen peroxide acts as a bleach, and this action is aided by the alkaline solution also produced by the reaction.
Borax is a good buffer, helping to keep the acidity or alkalinity of a solution stable.
The boron (along with the oxygen and salt) in a borax solution helps to disinfect by killing bacteria and fungi. http://sci-toys.com/ingredients/borax.html
Garlic Oil Capsules
We insert one or two capsules into the vagina and this gives some relief.
