Tooth Ache
My Experience of Tooth Abscess & Extraction
Photos show my progression after the tooth extraction to the swelling which peaked on day 5 when I began lymphatic drainage massage. My apologies for the mug shots, but the photos tell the story!
On Saturday, 1 October, 2016, I experienced pain from a tooth abscess in my bottom left hand side jaw. I did not know that trouble was brewing in that tooth and it came as a complete surprise to me. It was very inconveniently, a LONG weekend with no dentists being available until Tuesday, 4 October.
Suspecting an infection, I began eating garlic and tried holding a bulb of garlic in my mouth. I also drank water with vitamin C powder dissolved in it. However, I also knew from painful experience, that Vitamin C (sodium ascorbate) prevents the local anaesthetic that the dentist uses, from working. I knew I would need to see a dentist so I didn't take anymore vitamin C after Sunday.
The pain increased, so I made a charcoal poultice out of IDF#2 (from Eden Health Foods) and pushed it into the painful area of my mouth. The abscess did not burst and did not appear to be coming to a head.
As the pain increased, I began using alternating hot and cold applications on the sore jaw. These gave temporary relief, but not sufficient to keep me comfortable.
So it was then that I used the Equine Energiser (made by Anton Klemens) on my jaw. I turned the machine onto low and left it on my jaw all through the night. At low speed, the paddle/handle did not become hot and it was such a relief to have the machine. I suspected I might have an infection in my tooth, so I rinsed with small mouthfuls of colloidal silver and just held some in my mouth. This process made the pain endurable. I found it difficult to do anything except to cope with the pain. I didn't want to take pain-killers and didn't need to while I had access to the Equine Energiser and the colloidal silver water.
On Tuesday, I was given the first available appointment which was at 12:00 midday. The dentist remarked how swollen my face was, took x-rays that revealed the abscessed tooth and gave me 2 options - extraction or root canal. He also told me that I needed to take antibiotics so that the infection in my mouth would clear up and strong pain-killers to cope with the pain and swelling.
I opted for the extraction as I heard that root canals were not always successful and some people think they are dangerous to long term health. I am grateful that the dentist was very competent at doing his job. I received three separate injections to numb the area as he explained that because of the abscess, it would be much more challenging to ensure complete anaesthesia. However, he managed to do a great job with the anaesthetic and I was pain-free for a couple of blissful hours and the infected tooth was removed without complications. The tooth and I parted company at 12:45pm.
I filled the antibiotic prescription just in case I needed to use them and my pain level soon escalated again to where I definitely needed the strong pain-killers he prescribed too.
I used Young Living Essential Oils specifically oregano, thyme, mountain savory and marjoram to combat the infection. 3 times a day, I took about 6 drops of oregano, marjoram and thyme each, 3 drops of mountain savory in a veggie capsule. Then I added the anti-inflammatory/analgesic type oils of clove, wintergreen, palo santo, ocotea, frankincense. I took these oils took internally also and applied them topically after I diluted them with pure coconut oil.
Meanwhile my jaw continued to swell as the dentist predicted. By day 2, I knew that the infection was under control, however my face continued to swell up until the 5th day post-extraction.
I was very concerned about the continued swelling and asked an experienced for a check-up with a qualified nursing sister, who also happened to be a qualified therapeutic massage therapist. This nurse was wonderful and she reassured me that I would be able to shift the swelling with lymphatic massage and the oils I was using. So I watched some lymphatic massage videos on YouTube so that I could be sure to do it properly. I also very gently used the mini-tramp and used the HyperVibe to move that lymph out of my face. The fact that the massage and exercises worked wonderfully well. The swelling began to drain away rapidly from my face and I was much more comfortable within 24 hours.
I was very careful with my eating and only ate pawpaw and drank veggie juices for almost 10 days. No dry socket and no further infection!
After the swelling had decreased and my face was almost back to normal, I realised that I had received some complications in the form of an injured nerve which refused to un-numb. I began to apply the frankincense essential oil and whether it helped repair the tissue or not, I am unable to say, but slowly the nerve function began to return. After 2 weeks, there is still some pins-and-needles-type feeling in the chin area, but it is tolerable now.
What was very uncomfortable was the 3 mouth ulcers I had endured for 3 weeks prior to the tooth abscess. Then there was the pain of the abscess and the extraction and then, as if that wasn't enough mouth pain, I developed an ulcer on the very tip of my tongue that I received straight after the dental appointment. After 13 days, the tongue ulcer finally healed, but it was very frustrating and painful at the time. When the pain from the tongue ulcer was strong enough to interfere with eating, I would apply a drop of Young Living Essential clove or oregano oil on my tongue prior to eating. Then I would suffer from a burning tongue, watering eyes and feel compelled to do a weird looking dance for 30 seconds until that painful experience eased. At least the procedure offered me about 20 minutes of analgesic relief so that I was able to eat soft foods and drink juices.
Because I was able to use the Equine Energiser, colloidal silver, garlic oil capsules and Young Living essential oils, I only needed to take 2 strong pain-killers and 2 panadol over the entire horrible experience.
Overall, I'm very pleased with having been able to use a lot of natural remedies to help me through my tooth abscess ordeal. If I could have found a remedy that helped me keep the tooth, it would have been wonderful, but sadly I'm not sure such a remedy exists at this time.
